INTRODUCTION TO FIBER OPTICS

Complete 10-day Curriculum

Fiber optics is a hybrid of three technologies: optics, lasers and electronics. A fiber optic system is composed of an optical fiber, transmitter and receiver. This SLC Fiber Optic module will give students a comprehensive understanding of fiber optics. The Module begins with the history of fiber optics, then discusses several applications, gets into a little physics when we talk about light in the fiber cable and lists the different types of transmitters and receivers and how they work. Hands-on activities include: Duplex data transmission, transmission of radio signals, remote passive optical detection sensor, attenuation, bending losses, fiber termination, electronic repeater and much more. Module also includes Pretest, Final test and complete parts list.

MODULE TWO INCLUDES:
(2) Lab Modules with adapters, one set (2) of 1 meter and 3 meter 1000um core optical fiber, one set (2) of 5 meter and 10 meter 1000um core duplex optical fiber, (4) orange to yellow banana plugs, (2) brown to brown banana plugs, (2) audio interface test leads, package of polishing film, AM/FM radio with patch cord, 25 ft. extension cord, (6) ea. 2" x 4" white and black paper and transparent plastic sheeting, wire cutter and (6) single edge razor blades. Also, Fiber Optics Live Action DVD, (2) Student Guides and (1) Teacher's Manual.
